Newport Beach : Suit Claims Lifeguard Ran Jeep Over Woman
A Tustin woman who says she suffered back and internal injuries when run over by a lifeguard Jeep at a Corona del Mar beach is suing both the lifeguard who was driving and the City of Newport Beach.
Lori Spiak, 20, is charging that lifeguard James Turner was negligent when he drove the Jeep over her back as she slept on the sand Sept. 6, 1984. “It was on a level area, as I understand it from the police report,†said Spiak’s attorney, Dennis Hayden. “He’d just stopped at a lifeguard stand. When he pulled away, he apparently didn’t see Mrs. Spiak and drove right over her.â€
Hayden wouldn’t describe the severity of the injuries, noting that Spiak is still undergoing treatment. The lawsuit, filed in Orange County Superior Court, seeks unspecified damages from both the city and Turner.
