The Region : Review of L.A. Police Tactics Requested
- Share via
The Los Angeles Police Commission asked for a review of city police tactics in light of the bombing that destroyed nearly 60 homes in Philadelphia. “We as a commission ought to be in a position to assure the people of this community that we will review our policies, review the range of tactics we might employ,” Commissioner Sam Williams said. Police Chief Daryl F. Gates defended his characterization of Philadelphia Mayor Wilson Goode as “an inspiration for the nation.” Gates criticized the media for not asking him what he meant by those remarks, made on a television news show over the weekend. “I simply praised the mayor because, in the aftermath, he has been an inspirational leader,” Gates said. He said his remarks had nothing to do with the decision in Philadelphia to bomb a house containing members of the radical group MOVE.
