The board of education has voted unanimously to allow two out-of-the-area trips annually for each high school.

Under current policy, each of the city’s five high schools is allowed to send one group--such as an athletic team, club or musical ensemble--farther than 125 miles from the city on a school-related trip each year, said Richard Van Der Laan. But on Monday, in response to a request from Wilson High School, the board decided to allow two long-distance trips per high school each year.

The Wilson water polo team has been invited to a meet at Stanford University in Palo Alto. Because the Wilson Jazz Ensemble goes to the Monterey Jazz Festival each September, the water polo team would have been precluded from attending the Stanford meet without the change in policy.
