Gov. George Deukmejian said he will request a “major departure” from highway financing policy if the U.S. Navy decides to berth the battleship Missouri at San Francisco. Mayor Dianne Feinstein favors moving the Missouri to Hunter’s Point Naval Shipyard, but the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors voted 6 to 5 last January to oppose the plan. In a letter to U.S. Secretary of the Navy John R. Lehman Jr., Deukmejian said that if the ship is sent there, he will ask the California Transportation Commission to depart from its policy requiring local financing of highway interchanges in order to build a new interchange on Interstate 280 leading to Hunter’s Point.
