Nigerian police used tear gas in clashes with hundreds of illegal immigrants who have been ordered out of the country but were stranded when Nigerian officials closed the border Friday night. The immigrants, mostly from neighboring West African nations, threw stones at police, blocked the main road to the Lagos airport and torched billboards. They said they wanted to go home by road and not wait for Nigeria to provide sea transportation. On April 15, Nigeria ordered about 700,000 illegal immigrants to leave by May 10. Thousands failed to meet the deadline.
