Junior College BASEBALL : Valley Beats Canyons on Seven Runs in 12th

Valley College scored seven in the 12th inning Thursday to defeat first-place College of the Canyons in a Mountain Valley Conference game at Canyons.

Paul Cottrell’s game-winning, bases-loaded double scored two runs that started the rally.

Tim Riley, Jeff Gieske and Howard Halen each hit home runs for Valley.

Riley had four hits and three runs batted in. Gieske added three hits and two RBIs.

Bill Bluhm and Pete Kuld homered for Canyons.

Bob Hernandez pitched seven shutout innings in relief and struck out eight to earn the win.

Canyons, 12-3, remains in first place in conference. Valley is 8-8.

Pierce 8, Bakersfield 0

Steve Reed struck out 10 and scattered nine hits in pitching Pierce College to a Metro Conference victory at home.

Reed didn’t walk a batter in improving his record to 5-3. The winning pitcher got all the support he needed in the first inning when Mark Glennie scored on a double steal.

Russ Hersh hit a three-run homer in the sixth for the Brahmas (7-9, 11-13), and Joe Reda had a three-run double in the seventh.

Pierce’s Eric Pawling had three hits to run his hitting streak to 15 games.

Mike Romero had two hits, three walks and scored twice for the Brahmas.

West L.A. 12, Mission 6

Frank Orrelance hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning to seal West L.A.’s victory over Mission in a Mountain Valley Conference game at Valley College.

Dave Johnson and Lorenzo Lesky added three hits each for the second-place Oilers (10-6, 24-10), who had 16 hits.

Lee Caraballo (4-1, 7-2) struck out four and walked one.

Dave Peskin led Mission with three hits, and Mark Nolte added two hits and two RBIs. The Free Spirit (2-13-1, 5-17-1) committed four errors.

Moorpark 15, Antelope Valley 0

Pat Cheek had three hits, including a home run and three RBIs to lead Moorpark to a non-league victory at home.

Sandy Crosthwaite and Sean Lang each had two hits and two RBIs for the Raiders (10-7, 16-16), who had 19 hits. Tim Lichty, who had two hits and an RBI, has 16 hits in his last 23 at-bats.

Bob Agrault pitched seven innings for his third win in five decisions, and retired 18 batters in succession.

Antelope Valley is 6-7 in the Mountain Valley Conference and 17-13 overall.
