Major League Roundup : Tekulve Gets Out of a Jam; Phillies Win in 10th

The Philadelphia Phillies have seen Kent Tekulve slam the door in their faces many times. This time they were glad to be on his side.

Tekulve pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning, and Juan Samuel won the game with a two-out single in the 10th to lead the Phillies to a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Expos Monday night at Philadelphia.

It was the third straight win for the Phillies and it ended the Expos’ six-game winning streak.

Tekulve (1-0), obtained from the Pirates for reliever Al Holland, took over for Don Carman in the eighth with one out and men on second and third. After giving an intentional walk to Hubie Brooks, he forced Tim Wallach and Herm Winningham to ground out.

Wallach’s ball was a slow bouncer to third that Mike Schmidt snared with his bare hand and forced U.L. Washington at the plate on a close play.

Schmidt tied the score, 2-2, in the seventh with his second homer of the year and 427th of his career, putting him 18th on the all-time list ahead of Billy Williams.

Bert Roberge (0-1) got the loss.

Toronto 2, Oakland 1--Reliever Bill Caudill pulled the Blue Jays out of an eighth-inning jam and sent his former teammates to their fifth straight loss.

Luis Leal (2-1) allowed only five hits before Mike Davis hit his ninth home run in the seventh inning to pull Oakland within a run. Davis also has 23 runs batted in.

Jim Acker replaced Leal in the eighth and walked leadoff batter Alfredo Griffin, who went to third on a single by Dave Collins.

Caudill, traded to Toronto for Griffin and Collins during the winter, came on and escaped the trouble when Carney Lansford popped up, Collins was caught stealing and Bruce Bochte flied out. Caudill struck out Davis with a runner on first to end the game for his fifth save.

Kansas City 3, Cleveland 2--George Brett and Willie Wilson collected three hits apiece, and the Royals held off the Indians in a rain-delayed game at Kansas City.

Bud Black (2-1) took a 3-0 lead and a seven-hitter into the ninth inning. After retiring Pat Tabler, who went 0 for 4 to end his 15-game hitting streak, Black allowed singles to Andre Thornton and Brook Jacoby.

Reliever Dan Quisenberry replaced Black and gave up a run-scoring double to Mel Hall and a run-scoring groundout to George Vukovich before retiring Tony Bernazard to get his third save.

Seattle 9, Milwaukee 7--Donnie Scott belted a game-tying home run in the ninth inning and then drilled a two-run homer with two out in the 10th inning--his first two home runs of the season--as the Mariners broke an eight-game losing streak by beating the Brewers at Seattle.

Scott, a switch-hitting catcher, hit a leadoff homer batting left-handed in the ninth against Rollie Fingers. He connected from the right side off left-hander Ray Searage in the 10th. Dave Henderson singled with one out off Searage (0-2).

Ed Nunez (1-0) gained the victory in relief.
