Art Arthur, Oscar-Winning Writer, Dies

Arthur (Art) Arthur, an Academy Award winning documentary writer who also produced and wrote several films and television programs, has died in Riverside at age 73 of a respiratory ailment.

Arthur was a journalist in New York and Canada who moved into films in 1937. He won an Oscar for writing “Seeds of Destiny,†a documentary about starving children in Europe, which was released in 1946. He also wrote several Army Air Force films.

His early motion picture credits included “Sun Valley Serenade,†the Sonja Henie-Glenn Miller ice spectacular for which he supplied the story line.

His other films included “The Fabulous Dorseys,†“Northwest Stampede,†“Clarence the Cross-Eyed Lion†and “Battle Taxi.â€

On television he wrote several episodes of “Sea Hunt,†“Flipper†and “Gentle Ben.â€

Arthur died last Tuesday and is survived by his wife, Jessica, and two daughters, Victoria Arthur and Pamela Steele.
