Golden West, OCC Swimmers Win
Golden West College won the men’s division of the three-day South Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, which ended Saturday.
The Rustlers scored 611 points to 426 for runner-up Saddleback, as Steve Bentley of Golden West set a conference record in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in a time of 2:05.57.
That mark broke the standard of 2:11.55, set by Carl Salyer of Golden West in 1983.
In the women’s meet, Orange Coast ran away with the conference title, scoring 558.85 points to 338.5 for runner-up Golden West.
Tracy Averill led the Pirates, winning the 100-yard backstroke and swimming a leg for the winning 200-medley relay team.
Those whose conference-meet times met state standards qualify for the state junior college swim meet, which will be May 2-4 in Hartnell College at Salinas.
