Raiders Get a Seventh-Round Draft Pick as Rozelle Rules That Patriots Tampered

FOXBORO, Mass. â€”  The Raiders picked up a seventh-round draft choice from New England Saturday as compensation for the Patriots tampering with a Raider scout.

NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle ruled that Patriots Coach Raymond Berry acted improperly when he called Raider scout John Polonchek late in 1984 and lured him to the Patriots.

According to a New England spokesman, Berry did not know that Polonchek was a full-time employee of the Raiders when he contacted him. Polonchek, 57, will join the Patriots in the role of special assistant to Berry with emphasis on scouting.
