Carlsbad
A 23-year-old Carlsbad man died of massive head injuries Tuesday night after the four-wheel drive vehicle in which he was riding rolled down a 150-foot embankment.
Carlsbad police said the man, whose name is being withheld pending notification of relatives, and the jeep’s driver, Baker C. Alder, 25, of Carlsbad, were “off-roading†in the hills east of Lake Calaveras when the accident occurred. After trying unsuccessfully to drive up a steep hill, Alder began to back the vehicle down the embankment, when it flipped over and rolled down the hillside.
The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:43 p.m.
Alder was taken to Tri-City Hospital, where he was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.
