The Region : Low-Level Nuclear Dump Site Proposed

Over objections of the Deukmejian Administration, Assembly Democrats hastily amended a proposed compact with Arizona that would place California’s first low-level nuclear dump in the northeastern corner of San Bernardino County. The proposal to be considered on the Assembly floor next week raised the ire of minority Republican lawmakers, particularly Assemblyman Bill Leonard (R-Redlands), who with Sen. H. L. Richardson (R-Glendora) represents the selected area near the California-Nevada border. The site involves state land bounded by Interstate 15, California 127, the Inyo-San Bernardino County line and the California-Nevada border. Advocates noted that the area meets key guidelines that the site be sparse in population, have easy transportation access, low rainfall and relative safe from earthquakes.
