FILMS IN ENGLISH DOMINATE CANNES

PARIS — Films from English- speaking countries dominated the selections for this year’s Cannes Film Festival, announced by Pierre Viot, new president of the annual event.

Movies from the United States to be shown during the May 8-20 festival include “Mask” by Peter Bogdanovich, Clint Eastwood’s “Pale Rider,” “Birdy,” by Alan Parker, and “Mishima” by Paul Schrader. Woody Allen’s “The Purple Rose of Cairo” will be shown outside the competition.

Also in the lineup are Peter Weir’s “Witness,” Australian Ray Lawrence’s “Bliss,” and “Coca Cola Kid,” an Australian film by Yugoslav Dusan Makavejev.

Two Canadian films are to be shown, as well as one British film.

Three French films were among the non-English-language movies selected--”Poulet au Vinaigre,” by Claude Chabrol, “Detective,” by Jean-Luc Godard, and “Rendezvous,” by Andre Techine.
