The Region : Artukovic Due to Return

U.S. Magistrate Volney V. Brown Jr. ordered the return of accused war criminal Andrija Artukovic to Los Angeles for a May 1 hearing on additional evidence submitted against him by the Yugoslav government. The 85-year-old Artukovic, who suffers from a variety of physical and mental ailments, was transferred last month from the Long Beach Naval Hospital to a federal prison medical facility in Missouri. Brown already has ordered Artukovic’s extradition to Yugoslavia to stand trial on a single murder count. The May 1 hearing is to determine whether several thousand murder charges against Artukovic should be added to the extradition order, as requested by Yugoslav authorities.
