L.A. Teachers

I am a teacher in Los Angeles. The other day I received my regular monthly paycheck, and with it a notice that read: “The school district is now hiring 2,000 new teachers. Please, share the news with friends and relatives--it’s a great opportunity for those who are thinking of changing or starting new careers.†Then the telephone number of the teacher recruitment office was listed.

In other words, the district is again having trouble attracting well-qualified personnel for the teaching positions it must fill next year.

We teachers have known the solution to this problem for decades--double teachers’ salaries and cut class size in half. Then the school district will be able to complain that it is swamped with applications from thousands of men and women who are highly qualified.

But this will never happen. The public has made it abundantly clear that our children are not worth the expense. How very sad for all of us.
