Track and Field Roundup : Hawthorne Sets Prep Mark; Thomas Anchors in 44.5

Henry Thomas anchored Hawthorne (Calif.) High School to a national schoolboy record of 3:07.40 in the 1,600-meter relay, and Odessa broke the national junior college mark in the 1,600 Saturday during the 58th Texas Relays at Austin, Tex.

Thomas was timed in 44.5 seconds on his leg as Hawthorne broke the old record of 3:08.94 by Berkeley, Calif., in 1981.

Dallas Roosevelt High was second in 3:10.49, with schoolboy sensation Roy Martin running a 44.8 anchor.

The Texas Relays mark of 3:09.09 was held by Dallas Roosevelt.

Odessa College, anchored by Harold Madox, posted a 3:04.09 to shatter the previous record of 3:07.07 by Long Beach in 1979.

In the collegiate 1,600-meter relay, Baylor ran 3:00.88 to break its meet mark of 3:01.98.

Earlier, Martin came from 15 meters off the pace to anchor Dallas Roosevelt to a 400-meter relay victory.

Martin took the baton from brother Rod Martin and blazed to the finish line ahead of Dallas Carter and Hawthorne and its star anchor man, Thomas. Roosevelt’s time was 41.01 to 41.39 for Dallas Carter and 41.41 for Hawthorne. The time was off the meet mark of 40.65 set by Roosevelt last year.

In the Sun Angel meet at Tempe, Ariz., Carl Lewis ran the opening 200-meter leg in 19.6 seconds, and Johnny Gray ran 1:43.3 on the 800-meter anchor leg as the Santa Monica Track Club set an American record of 3:10.76 in the 1,600 meter sprint medley relay.

The old record of 3:11.08 was set by Athletic Attic in 1983. There is no world record for the event, which is contested only in the United States.

Other members of the Santa Monica team were Ferran Tyler, 20.5 in the 200, and Benny Hollis, 46.6 in the 400.

Ronald Bradstock of SMU, a native of Britain, set a United Kingdom record of 291-7 in the javelin.

Bill Green of the Stars and Stripes Club set a meet record of 235-11 in the hammer throw.

Merlene Ottey-Page of Jamaica won the women’s 100 meters in 11.13.

At Eugene, Ore., Ken Flax of Oregon set an American collegiate record of 242-8 in the hammer throw as the Ducks defeated Washington, 109-53, in a dual meet.

In a special 1,500-meter race, Olympic 800-meter champion Joaquim Cruz was the winner in 3:41.20. Cruz still attends Oregon but is competing unattached this season.

At Berkeley, Jim Doehring of San Jose State set a meet record of 66-0 in the shot put in a dual meet against California.

Cal won the meet, 86-72.
