Mendoza Paces UCSD to Sweep
SAN DIEGO — UC San Diego’s baseball team stretched its winning steak to four games with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 4-3 and 6-1, Saturday at Olsen Field.
Triton center fielder David Mendoza broke a 3-3 tie in the first game with a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh, scoring David Stanovich. Mendoza was 2 for 3 in the opener. Kevin Illingworth (1-1) got the win after relieving starter David de Cordova in the seventh inning.
Mendoza was 2 for 4 with two RBIs in the second game. He had a solo home run in the fifth inning. UCSD starting pitcher Mark Sloan (5-3) went the distance, scattering four hits and striking out nine, for the win.
UCSD improved to 18-15-1. Wisconsin-Whitewater dropped to 2-10.
