USFL Roundup : Williams and Outlaws Rout Flutie and Generals, 31-13
Doug Williams completed 18 of 30 passes for 231 yards and three touchdowns, two to wide receiver Al Williams, as the Arizona Outlaws beat the error-prone New Jersey Generals, 31-13, in a United States Football League game Saturday night at Tempe, Ariz.
New Jersey quarterback Doug Flutie completed 16 of 28 passes for 243 yards, but had four intercepted.
Arizona, now 4-2 overall and 4-0 at home, built up a 24-13 halftime lead and coasted from there before a season-high crowd of 30,432 at 70,021-seat Sun Devil Stadium.
New Jersey (3-3) had taken a 13-10 lead on Maurice Carthon’s one-yard run 3:19 into the second quarter.
Kevin Long put the Outlaws ahead to stay 6:34 later at 17-13 on a two-yard run. An interception of a Flutie pass led to Doug Williams’ 14-yard touchdown pass to Al Williams 29 seconds before halftime.
The Williams-to-Williams combination hooked up again on a eight-yard scoring play 5:27 into the third quarter for a 31-13 bulge.
Birmingham 25, Jacksonville 18--Cliff Stoudt threw three touchdown passes, two to little Joey Jones, to lead the Stallions before a crowd of 41,200 at Jacksonville, Fla.
Birmingham, leading the Eastern Conference, is now 5-1, while Jacksonville fell to 2-4.
