THE WORLD GUIDE TO HOUSE PLANTS, edited by Anthony Huxley (Scribner’s: $19.95). Huxley provides one of the most refreshing approaches to house-plant care yet. Almost entering through the back door, Huxley and contributors Richard Gilbert, Jeffrey Grimes and Richard Gorer put indoor vegetation into geographical and historical context, dividing plants according to their place of origin. The result is not only good reading but good information on the care and feeding of indoor plants, including proper acclimatizing. Color illustrations of many of the plants cited, both in the wild and in the pot, complement the delectable text, which is filled with fascinating historical tidbits. A marvelous supplement to the garden bookshelf.
