Nebraska Pounds Six Junior Varsity Pitchers to Beat San Diego State, 24-8
SAN DIEGO — Nebraska team took advantage of an inexperienced San Diego State pitching corps Sunday to beat the Aztecs, 24-8, in a nonconference intercollegiate baseball game at SDSU’s Smith Field.
Nebraska (13-8) pounded six Aztec pitchers who had been moved up from the junior varsity. SDSU (25-11) rested its pitching staff for the week-long Riverside Tournament, which begins today. The Aztecs will play a doubleheader today against Oregon State and the Air Force Academy. SDSU, the tournament’s defending champion, plays another doubleheader on Tuesday.
On Sunday, Aztec starter Rich Spandikow (0-1) allowed four runs in the first inning and failed to retire a hitter before being replaced on the mound. Nebraska designated hitter Bill McGuire was 4 for 6 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. First baseman Mike Duncan also went 4 for 6 with 2 doubles and scored 4 times. Nebraska had 20 hits.
