WASHINGTON — Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell returned to the bench today after missing more than two months of work after surgery for a cancerous prostate gland.
Powell missed hearing arguments in the 48 cases presented to the court in January and February, as well as the cases argued last week. It is unlikely that he will participate in deciding most, if any, of those cases. Powell underwent surgery at the Rochester, Minn., Methodist Hospital on Jan. 8.
