The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California lowered its wholesale water rates for the first time in 25 years in a move that could affect rates to consumers in six Southland counties. District directors voted to roll back its 1985-86 rates by $5 an acre foot on water it sells to member agencies. An acre foot is enough to supply a family of five for a year. District officials said higher than anticipated sales and reduced power usage helped lead to the lower rates that will take effect July 1.
