College Baseball : Fishel Leads Titans to Split of Doubleheader With San Jose
John Fishel was 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs to lead Cal State Fullerton’s 14-hit attack as the Titans beat San Jose State, 13-3, in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader Saturday at Titan Field.
Starter Dion Beck got the win with relief help from Mike Harkey. Shane Turner was 3 for 5 with 3 runs and 1 RBI for Fullerton.
Steve Olson worked 1 innings of scoreless relief to help San Jose State salvage a split with an 8-5 win in the second game. Mark Saucedo and Terry Conway were both 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs for the Spartans. Turner was 2 for 3 with 1 RBI for the Titans in the second game.
In other college action:
Southern California College 13-6, Biola 7-1--Tim Fortugno threw a one-hitter to lead the Vanguards to the win in the second game of the NAIA District 3 doubleheader at Biola. The only hit Fortugno allowed was a single by Matt Suttle in the third inning. Howard Wellema was 3 for 4 with two doubles for the Vanguards and finished the day 5 for 8.
Titus Houston was 5 for 5 with 2 RBIs to lead SCC to the win in the first game. Tom Link was 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs and Howard Wellema added a solo homer for the Vanguards (2-0, 11-8-2). Dave Turney contributed a double and home run.
UC Irvine vs. Pacific, postponed rain--The Anteaters’ game at Stockton was rained out. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader today and one game Monday.
In junior college action:
Santa Ana 6, Southwestern 5--Ruben Gonzalez tripled home two runs to cap a four-run ninth inning as the Dons rallied from a 3-2 deficit to beat the Apaches at Southwestern. Gonzalez also hit a homer in the fourth inning for Santa Ana’s first run.
