Ann Ryan, a Malibu graphic artist who hopes to see an esplanade built along part of Pacific Coast Highway, has organized a nonprofit corporation called the Friends of the Esplanade to raise funds for the project.
Estimated cost is $750,000.
Ryan envisions an esplanade from the Malibu Lagoon State Park to the Malibu Pier.
Her idea is to beautify the highway and provide a focal point for Malibu, connecting such landmarks as the pier, the Adamson House and Surfrider Beach. The walkway would have decorative lamps, planter boxes and viewing areas.
The concept has been approved by the state Department of Parks and Recreation, the Department of Transportation and Supervisor Deane Dana.
