NEW YORK — The most seriously wounded of the four teen-agers shot by Bernhard H. Goetz on a subway train last December is no longer in a coma but has suffered “significant brain damage,” hospital officials said Wednesday.
St. Vincent’s Hospital spokesman Dan Sorrenti said that Darrell Cabey, 19, remains in serious condition and that his neurological prognosis is guarded. The brain damage “has severely impaired his ability to comprehend and communicate,” his doctors said in a statement.
Goetz was indicted on charges of illegal weapons possession in the case and remains at liberty.
