Spring Training Roundup : Tests Show Nipper Has an Ulcer

Right-hander Al Nipper of the Boston Red Sox was discharged from a hospital at Winter Haven, Fla., Friday after tests confirmed he is suffering from a gastric stomach ulcer.

Dr. Arthur Pappas, the Red Sox’s physician, said that Nipper’s return to full-time pitching is “roughly in the two-month range.”

Nipper, 25, was admitted to the hospital last Tuesday after a routine physical examination showed an anemic condition, a low red blood cell level. The ulcer can be treated with medication.

For the second straight day, pitcher Don Sutton did not report to the Oakland A’s training camp at Phoenix. Sutton, who will turn 40 April 4, was obtained from Milwaukee for pitcher Ray Burris last December. He later said he would not report to the A’s camp because he wants to be traded to a Southern California team.

At Miami, ex-Angel Fred Lynn has been the hitting standout in the early stages of the Baltimore Orioles spring training camp. “He looks like he’s in midseason form,” Manager Joe Altobelli said. “He’s hitting the ball with authority to all fields.”

Lynn is one of three free agents signed by the Orioles during the winter. The others are former Angel Don Aase and one-time Dodger Lee Lacy.

Injury report: Chicago White Sox pitcher Tom Seaver was hit on the right ankle during batting practice and could miss a couple of workouts. Although the injury was not believed serious, the outside of the ankle was badly swollen. “It doesn’t hurt to walk,” Seaver said. “We’ll see what it’s like tomorrow.” . . . Boston Red Sox slugger Tony Armas, the major league 1984 home run champion, has a slightly swollen right wrist. “I got bitten by a bee or something,” he said. “It’s nothing serious, but I really won’t be able to swing properly for a couple of days.”
