Area Roundup : Tickets Still On Sale for Boxing Show at Irvine Marriott

A limited number of $25 and $20 reserved seat tickets for the March 11 All-Star Boxing Show at the Irvine Marriott Hotel will be on sale this weekend.

Tickets may be purchased Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. at the ticket center in the main lobby of the Marriott, 18000 Von Karman Ave.

The show is the second in a series of monthly boxing cards at the hotel. An estimated 500 people were turned away from the first show.

In the featured bout, Cubanito Perez, formerly of Cuba and now living in Santa Ana, will fight Rocky Alonso of Guadalajara, Mexico. Perez is 26-1, with his only defeat coming at the hands of Hector (Macho) Camacho in a 1983 bout. Alonso is 24-6-1, including wins over Mario (Azabache) Martinez and Kiko Bejines.

Also on the card is Avery Rawls, five-time California Golden Gloves heavyweight champion. Rawls is 2-0 in the pros.

Former boxer Danny (Little Red) Lopez will have two boxers from his stable on the six-bout card, which is held in the Grand Ballroom of the Marriott.

An Amateur Athletic Union karate tournament sponsored by Japan Karate-Do, Ryobu-Kai, will be conducted Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club in Huntington Beach.

The tournament will be for the Southern Pacific Assn. team championships. Competitors are from AAU karate clubs in Orange and Los Angeles counties.

Registration begins at 9 a.m.

The Rams Booster Club has elected new officers for the 1985 season.

They are: Frank Sciarra, president; Joel Vest, first vice-president; Jim Ort, second vice-president; Sam Stone, third vice-president; Marge Hinson, secretary; and John Whates, treasurer.

The club’s next activity is the Second Annual Rams Booster Club Golf & Tennis Tournament co-chaired by Rams Johnnie Johnson, Jeff Kemp, Bill Bain, and Leroy Irvine. The tournament will be April 8 at the Yorba Linda Country Club.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the American Cancer Society in memory of Kirk Collins.

Applications are being accepted for the Fountain Valley Recreation Department’s Spring 3-Man Basketball leagues.

Team rosters and fees may be submitted to the Recreation Department through 4 p.m. on March 15. Fees are $60 per team, and must be submitted in the form of a money order or a cashier’s check, made payable to the City of Fountain Valley.

Schoolpower, the fund raising arm of the Laguna Beach Education Foundation, will be hosting a 10K run at 8 a.m., April 29 at Laguna Beach.

The race will start on Forest Avenue, wind through Laguna Canyon, and finish one block from Main Beach. The course is mostly flat. The race sanctioned by The Athletics Congress (TAC).

Steve Scott, Ruth Wysocki and Tom Wysocki are scheduled to participate.

The registration fee is $10 with a T-shirt; $6 without the T-shirt. Proceeds will benefit the Laguna Beach Public Schools.

The Parker Enduro boat race is scheduled for 8 a.m. Sunday (Mountain Standard Time) on the Arizona side of the Colorado River near Parker. The race begins on the shoreline of La Paz County Park, seven miles north of Parker on Highway 95. Spectators may view the race at the park or at other strategic locations on the river between La Paz and the Bluewater Marina. . . .
