Community College Baseball : Fullerton Gets Two Victories

Fullerton College won two games Saturday in the Mt. San Antonio baseball tournament. The Hornets downed West Los Angeles, 4-1, in the first game, then beat Cypress, 7-5.

In the first game, pitcher Mike Kruger gave up just two hits in seven innings for the Hornets, who out-hit West L.A., 14-4. Kruger (1-0) gave up the lone run in the second inning, and the Hornets scored two in the third to take a 3-1 lead.

In the second game, first baseman Rodney Clark was 3 for 4 with a double and 2 RBIs. The Hornets’ Tony Tubbs (1-1) came on in the fifth inning and gave up just one run in recording the win.

Fullerton (7-3) plays Cypress again today at 1:30 for the championship.

Saddleback 5, Long Beach City 4--Dave Ward’s ground ball with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning drove in Scott Eilertson, giving the Gauchos a come-from-behind victory at Saddleback. Tim Phenecie relieved Gaucho starter Chris Frederick with the score tied 3-3 in the seventh inning and held the Vikings scoreless in the last two innings for the win.

Santa Ana 14, Southwestern 10--The Dons engaged in an offensive show with 17 hits, including two homers by Dave Keith and another by Paul Petredes. Santa Ana designated hitter Ruben Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to four games and 12 hits in his last 13 at-bats, going 3 for 3 and driving in three runs. Reliever Gary Pifer (2-0) picked up the win by pitching the last two innings for Santa Ana (4-0), allowing two hits and no runs.
