Prep Basketball SOUTHERN SECTION GIRLS : Chaminade Bounces Bell-Jeff to Enter Playoffs

Chaminade High advanced to the Southern Section playoffs for the first time by beating Bell-Jeff, 55-49, in the San Fernando Valley League’s third-place tiebreaker.

Lucy Braker, a 5-6 sophomore guard, scored 16 points and had eight rebounds to lead the Eagles.

Junior forward Melissa Ingalls scored 15 points, including seven in the fourth quarter, while Daiva Tomkus, a 6-1 center, added 10 points and 13 rebounds. Jenny Hurdle had eight assists for Chaminade.

Bell-Jeff went ahead, 47-45, with two minutes left in the game. But three successive Chaminade baskets--two after assists by Hurdle and the third on a Hurdle layup--put the Eagles back on top for good.

Cathi Cotti and Valerie Keeling had 13 points each for Bell-Jeff.

The Guards fell to 9-6 in league. Chaminade finished 10-5 in league and 16-6 overall.

Pilgrim 53, Buckley 44

Pilgrim High outscored Buckley High by nine points in the second period and went on to win the nonleague game at home. Kesha Martin, a 6-1 freshman, scored 26 points to lead the Patriots, while Donna Glassford added 13 points.

Buckley’s Joelle Wilkes scored 22 points, while teammate Ariana Lallone had 12 points, 30 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.

Viewpoint 38, Crossroads 35

In a nonleague match-up of teams that were unbeaten in their leagues, Viewpoint High edged visiting Crossroads High behind the play of Roxana Rafik, who had nine points and 12 rebounds, and Kim Fields, who had nine points and seven steals.

Viewpoint, which finished 10-0 in the Heritage League, is 15-4 overall. Crossroads, which was led by Kim Turner’s 12 points, dropped to 15-6 overall after going 10-0 in the Delphic League.

Glendale 42, Hoover 29

Glendale High rallied from a first quarter deficit to beat arch-rival Hoover and finish second in the Pacific League with a 7-3 record.

Martha Rankin and Susan Siam each scored 10 points for Glendale. Hoover finished with a 4-6 record in league.
