College Basketball Roundup : Keeling’s Late Free Throws Give Santa Clara 73-71 Win
Senior guard Harold Keeling scored 26 points, including the winning free throws with six seconds remaining Friday night at Moraga, to lift Santa Clara to a 73-71 victory over St. Mary’s and into a share of the West Coast Athletic Conference basketball lead.
The Broncos, 5-1 in the conference and 16-6 overall, moved into a first-place tie with Pepperdine, which was idle. The Gaels dropped to third at 4-2 and 12-9.
Santa Clara never trailed, but St. Mary’s tied the game on five occasions, including a 71-71 deadlock on senior center David Cooke’s free throw with 1:32 remaining.
Cooke, however, missed the second free throw and the Broncos called time with 18 seconds left to set up a final play.
Keeling got the ball under the basket and was fouled, making both free throws to give Santa Clara its fifth consecutive WCAC road victory.
Senior forward Scott Lamson scored a season-high 24 points for the Broncos. Cooke topped the Gaels with 27 points and forwards Eric Cooks and Brian Shaw each added 12.
Portland 59, Gonzaga 58--Guard Fred Harris scored a career-high 19 points for the Pilots as they scored their first WCAC win at Portland. Portland is 11-10 and 1-5, Gonzaga 14-7 and 3-3. Tim Ruff (G) 15 and 13 rebounds.
Harvard 75, Yale 71--Joe Carrabino scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half to lead the Crimson at Cambridge, Mass.
Harvard made 31 or 35 free throws, including 22 in a row in the second half, as it raised its record to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in the Ivy League, tied for first with Cornell.
Nevada Reno 100, Idaho State 92--Rob Harden scored 32 points, including eight three-point shots, in a Big Sky game at Pocatello, Idaho. Reno is 13-8 and 6-2, Idaho State 9-14 and 2-6.Nelson Peterson (IS) 37.
