A $3.9-million settlement has been reached on lawsuits stemming from the 1979 nuclear power plant accident at Three Mile Island, near Harrisburg, Pa., with the two largest awards going to parents of children born with birth defects. The personal injury suits were filed on behalf of 72 children and four men. The suits charged the defendants suffered radiation exposure and other ill-effects from the accident, the worst in the history of the U.S. commercial nuclear industry.
