The Region : Block Latchkey Law Efforts, GOP Urged
State Assemblywoman Cathie Wright (R-Simi Valley) urged a group of influential Republicans to block what she said are Democratic plans to force Gov. George Deukmejian to veto sensitive social legislation and thus harm his 1986 reelection campaign. Wright told the board of directors of the California Republican Assembly meeting in West Hollywood that Democrats might try to revive legislation Deukmejian vetoed last year on latchkey children, or women’s issues, hoping that another round of vetoes would portray Deukmejian as unsympathetic to women and the poor if he runs for reelection in 1986. She said GOP lawmakers should close ranks to block such bills in the Legislature before they reach Deukmejian.
