Daniel K. Whitehurst, saying he has “accomplished about all I’m going to accomplish” as Fresno’s mayor, announced his resignation to take a fellowship at Harvard University. Whitehurst’s second four-year term ends in May, and he decided earlier not to seek reelection. Whitehurst was the youngest mayor in the city’s history when he was elected in 1977 at age 28 after two years as a councilman. He ran for the Democratic nomination for U.S. senator in 1982.
