Cal Lutheran Holds Off Point Loma, 53-52
SAN DIEGO — Pat Gibbs hit a pair of free throws with 27 seconds remaining to give Cal Lutheran College a 53-52 upset victory Tuesday night over Point Loma Nazarene College in the NAIA District 3 opener for both teams at Point Loma.
After Gibbs’ free throws, the Crusaders’ Steve Bruce scored with 12 seconds left to move Point Loma within one point. The Crusaders immediately fouled Cal Lutheran on the inbounds. Cal Lutheran missed on its free throw try, Point Loma got the rebound, but Greg Kimbrell missed a 15-footer with two seconds remaining.
Point Loma (12-4) was led by center Deon Richards, who scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds. Cal Lutheran improved to 5-14.
