Vanderbilt strength coach E. J. (Doc) Kreis has asked for and received a leave of absence from the Commodore athlete program in the wake of an investigation into the source of a prescription drug found in the body of a dead Clemson University athlete.
Kreis came to Vanderbilt in 1980 after formerly serving as strength coach for Georgia Southern University. He also owned and operated a gym.
A spokesman for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said that a South Carolina investigation into the death of Clemson runner Augustinius Jaspers has led to Nashville as the possible source of phenylbutazone, an anti-inflammatory drug.
