Former Black Panther leader Huey Newton’s challenge to his conviction and two-year prison sentence for possession of a gun as a former felon was turned down by U.S. District Judge Robert Aguilar in San Francisco. The judge allowed Newton to remain free on bail for 30 days while appealing his conviction. The charge grew out of Newton’s alleged pistol-whipping of a man in 1974. Newton went to Cuba and returned in 1977. He was acquitted of the pistol-whipping charge when the alleged victim refused to testify but was convicted of possessing a gun.
