LONDON — Physicians have removed the gall bladder of former Prime Minister James Callaghan, 72, St. Thomas’s Hospital said Tuesday.
A hospital spokeswoman said Callaghan was admitted over the weekend and had the operation Monday. “His condition is comfortable,” the spokeswoman said.
Callaghan headed a Labor Party government from 1976 to 1979, when he stepped down as Labor’s leader after his defeat by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative Party. He retained his House of Commons seat.
