Brynton Lemar had 24 points on seven-for-13 shooting and a couple of crucial plays down the stretch to lead top-seeded San Diego St. Augustine to a 61-57 come-from-behind victory over second-seeded Chaminade in their CIF Southern California Division III championship at Colony High in Ontario on Saturday.

Chaminade led by as many as 11 points in the second half, but St. Augustine went on a 14-0 run at the top of the fourth quarter, and Lemar made a three-pointer with just under four minutes left to give the Saints their first lead of the second half, 52-51.

Lemar followed that play with an important drive to the basket with just under a minute remaining. He was fouled and made both of his free throws to give the Saints a 59-57 lead.

In the final seconds of the game, Chaminade’s Jaron Marin shot a couple of three-point attempts, but they bounced off of the rim.

Eric Monroe had a big block for St. Augustine with 2:15 left and Drew Madsen made two crucial free throws in the final minute.

Jack Williams led Chaminade with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Trey Kell scored 17 points for the Saints on an efficient 8-for-15 shooting.

The Saints outrebounded the Eagles, 44-26. Madsen led the boards for the Saints with 10 rebounds and Brent Jones and Lemar each added eight.

In an unusual scene, a group of San Diego fans threw chalk into the air during halftime, emulating LeBron James’ former pregame routine. Play had to be stopped twice in the third quarter to clean the floor.

‘Call a technical,’ screamed one Chaminade fan during the lengthy delay. His request was not honored.

San Diego had a spirited fan section to say the least, with two fans shaking huge cardboard cutouts of Pope Francis’ face.
