Baseball: Chris Castellanos lifts Long Beach Poly past El Toro

Stanford-bound left-hander Chris Castellanos of Long Beach Poly can be counted on to throw his best against the best, and he came through with a three-hitter on Thursday in a 3-2 victory over El Toro.

His pitching opponent was Chasen Ford, who went undefeated last season for El Toro. Castellanos struck out eight and walked one.

Julian Griego’s walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh broke a 2-2 tie.

Fountain Valley (6-0) handed No. 1-ranked Cypress its first defeat, 5-4, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Daniel Patzlaff had two hits and Jordan Lucio had two RBIs. Marina defeated Santa Margarita, 6-2.

In the El Segundo tournament, West Torrance advanced to the gold division championship game with a 9-1 semifinal win over Banning. Mira Costa defeated Gardena Serra, 11-1, in six innings. Kevin Lopez had two hits and four RBIs. Christian Reynolds and Gorden Cardenas combined on a four-hitter.

Hunter Tidwell had two hits in Vista Murrieta’s 5-2 win over San Clemente.

Jack Hartman struck out 10 in Cleveland’s 7-2 win over Crespi. Matt del Mundo had two hits. In the second game of a doubleheader, Cleveland defeated Crespi, 3-2. Steven Perez struck out 13.

Palisades defeated Taft, 5-3. Village Christian defeated Arleta, 8-6. St. Francis defeated Pasadena, 5-4. Anders Schraer had two hits and two RBIs and Andres Kim added a single and double.

Alhambra defeated Pasadena Poly, 5-4, with three runs in the seventh. Ralph Rojas had two hits for Alhambra. David Orndorf had two hits for Poly.

Quartz Hill defeated Desert Christian, 16-1. Konner Arnold hit a grand slam and threw four shutout innings. Jagger Ruffins had three hits. Rim of the World defeated Serrano, 1-0. Wyatt McGilvery threw the shutout and scored the only run.

Malibu defeated Lawndale, 2-1, in the Southern California Invitational Blue Division championship game. Chase Lambert threw five inning and had one RBI. Frank Thomas knocked in the game-winning run. Lambert struck out 10. Malibu is 5-0.

Anaheim Canyon defeated Los Alamitos, 4-2, to improve to 4-0.
