Huntington Beach Edison has never played in a CIF state championship bowl game, but the Chargers will be prepared to put up a good fight against Gardena Serra on Saturday night in a Division II regional bowl game at Orange Coast College. The winner advances to the CIF state championship Division II bowl game on Dec. 15 at Home Depot Center.
‘We’re honored and we’re excited,’ Edison Coach Dave White said.
The Chargers won their Southern Section first title in White’s 27 years as coach. They have a very strong defense that relies on swarm tackling. They have not faced the type of speed and athleticism that Serra has.
‘We’re going to see if we can use 12 players,’ White joked.
Serra was selected despite two losses, but those losses were to City Section champion Narbonne and Chaminade, a team the Cavaliers defeated to win the Western Division championship. And their win over Pac-5 champion Long Beach Poly had to be influential in helping the section commissioners pick Serra over San Diego champion Oceanside.
‘I’m so fired up,’ Serra Coach Scott Altenberg said.
