Carson Coach Elijah Asante received plenty of strange looks when word got out about his team’s tough nonleague schedule, but he ignored the skeptics.

“We’re playing the Pac-5 playoff tournament,†he said.

The Colts opened with a victory over Santa Ana Mater Dei, but they have since lost to Long Beach Poly and Santa Margarita, and still to come is a game against Mission Viejo on Friday at Mission Viejo.

“We’re playing the very best in Southern California, and we’re playing well,†Asante said. “We’re hanging. We’re not at that level yet, but they’re making us a stronger team for the Marine League and City playoffs.â€

Santa Margarita (4-0) scored 25 consecutive points to beat the Colts, 39-21. Most impressively, receiver Darreus Rogers was held to three catches for 19 yards. He had 24 catches and five TDs against Mater Dei and Poly. The Eagles devoted two and sometimes three players to stopping Rogers.

Asante said the Colts stopped trying to get the ball to Rogers, and that might have been a mistake. So look for Rogers to be back in the passing scheme even if Mission Viejo attempts to duplicate what Santa Margarita did.
