Softball: Santiago’s Division 1 win is Sweet

Lauren Sweet hit a grand slam home run over the center field fence with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Corona Santiago to a dramatic 4-1 victory over Anaheim Canyon in the Southern Section Division 1 championship game at Deanna Manning Stadium in Irvine.

After Danielle Hernandez led off with a walk and Brittany Aberlachi grounded into a fielder’s choice, Jordan Mowatt was walked intentionally. Carissa Turang grounded to third and Brenda Lee drew a walk, setting the stage for Sweet’s 15th homer of the season.

Erica Romero pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts for the third-seeded Sharks (28-5), who extended their winning streak to 20 games.

Cheyanne Tarango pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts and seven walks for Canyon (23-8).
