The state track meet has started under dry and cool conditions at Clovis Buchanan High, but things could turn soggy by the end of the night.
The latest forecast calls for a 30% chance of showers Friday night and a 70% chance of rain during the championship races Saturday. That’s not good for those hoping to see records fall.
The preliminary heats are mostly about surviving and advancing, though occasionally there are surprises. Two years ago, Riverside La Sierra’s Reggie Wyatt broke the national record in the 300-meter hurdles during a preliminary heat with a time of 35.02 seconds, a record that stands.
Competition has started in the boys’ discus, boys’ long jump and girls’ triple jump, with track events scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Agoura’s Jonathan Cabral is a threat to challenge Wyatt’s record in the 300 hurdles and Chris Nelloms’ 21-year-old national record of 13.30 in the 110 hurdles. Cabral ran the latter event in a wind-aided 13.27 last week at the Southern Section Masters Meet.
