Sun Valley Poly, a team with City Section Division II title aspirations, opened its season Saturday afternoon with a 41-14 victory over Franklin at Poly.
Quarterback Eddie Moncivais scored two touchdowns on short runs and added touchdown passes of 45 and five yards to tight end Erick Martinez. Sophomore Horacio Barron made two interceptions to lead Poly’s defense.
Franklin trailed, 13-7, at halftime and was driving toward the end zone on its first possession of the third quarter. But Barron intercepted quarterback Michael Orozco at the 10-yard line. On the next play, Tony Ephriam, younger brother of Poly All-City running back Kevin Ervin, ran 90 yards for a touchdown. Poly scored 28 consecutive points in the second half.
Ervin rested for much of the second half and finished with 73 yards in 13 carries.
Franklin sophomore receiver Josh Taylor caught 11 passes for 104 yards and one touchdown. Orozco was 21 of 37 for 237 yards and two touchdowns.
