Boys’ basketball: Taft, Mater Dei advance in Fairfax tourney

Woodland Hills Taft and Santa Ana Mater Dei each won their first-round games of the Fairfax tournament on Tuesday, setting up a quarterfinal meeting on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
Taft defeated North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, 75-65. Mater Dei defeated Gardena Serra, 87-47.
In other opening games, Santa Monica defeated Fairfax, 58-34, and Los Angeles Price held off La Canada, 71-65. Santa Monica will play Price on Thursday at 7 p.m.
In Wednesday games, Long Beach Poly will face Crenshaw at 7 p.m. and St. Bernard will meet Dorsey at 8:30 p.m.
