Last year with superstar Layshia Clarendon, Cajon was one of the best teams in the nation. The Cowgirls finished the season with a 32-2 record, raking in victories over proverbial powerhouses Long Beach Poly and Brea Olinda.

But Clarendon has graduated, and in an interview before the season began, Cajon coach Mark Lehman said he didn’t think he had a top-25-caliber team this season.

Perhaps he spoke too soon.

Cajon (13-2), ranked No. 13 by The Times, has garnered some great wins against strong teams, including Bishop Montgomery and Summit.

‘In the Bishop Montgomery game, we came back from behind and beat them,’ Lehman said, adding, ‘That showed our team we could do a lot of things.’

Cajon has only one senior, and Lehman said his team is progressing and learning.

‘Right now we’re clicking on all cylinders,’ Lehman said. ‘I guess we got tired of losing.’
