Supposedly a year away from being championship material because of its youth, Westlake made quite a statement Friday with a 38-14 victory over Moorpark to win the Marmonte League championship.
What a performance by Westlake (10-0). Michael Tack had two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. The Warriors’ defense was dominant after giving up an 18-play drive to start the game. The team even dumped ice water on Coach Jim Benkert with two minutes left in the game.
Westlake’s win probably gives the No. 1 seed for the Northern Division to Valencia, with St. Bonaventure No. 2 and Westlake No. 3. Nelson Spruce caught passes for 125 yards, including a 79-yard TD. Tavior Mowry rushed for 122 yards.
Moorpark drops to 9-1. Its passing attack struggled all night, with the Warriors getting three interceptions.
