Encino Crespi’s 41-37 loss to Los Angeles Loyola probably cost the Celts a Pac-5 Division playoff berth. There’s one at-large berth, and Newport Harbor out of the Sunset League is likely to get it.

The reason is common opponent. Crespi tied with Loyola for third place in the Serra League. Newport Harbor beat Loyola, which beat Crespi.

It will be tough for the Celts to not make the playoffs with all the talent they have, but last-minute losses to Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and the Cubs can’t be overlooked.

Loyola’s comeback victory Friday night might have boosted the chances of interim Coach Adam Guerra, but I expect Loyola to begin its search for a new coach immediately.

Don’t be surprised if Harry Welch’s name comes up. He has won state bowl games at Canyon Country Canyon and St. Margaret’s and might be interested in a return to big-school football.

Whatever happens, Guerra had the Cubs playing hard and not giving up, and for a 24-year-old rookie coach, that’s pretty good.
