Robert Garrett has never started 8-0 before, but the Crenshaw coach declined to call this is best team. He apparently doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. I didn’t know he could be such a big softie.

‘I don’t try to get involved with that,’ Garrett said of naming his best team. ‘You miss some names along the way.’

Garrett did call this one of his top three teams, though he wouldn’t name the other two. Hopefully he would consider his 2005 team, the first batch of Cougars to win the City Section’s top division, for inclusion.

Asked about a possible CIF state championship bowl berth, Garrett again turned coy.

‘That’s not up to me,’ he said. ‘That’s up to the people who make those decisions. Maybe something like the BCS computer. I don’t have any control over it or even get a vote. If it comes, it comes. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t.’

Garrett did say he wants to keep playing as long as possible.

‘I think we can play and compete with anybody in the state, the nation,’ he said.

So there.
