It was a simple but effective strategy.

Los Alamitos ran 19 plays on its first drive, 14 of them handoffs to tailback Nick Richardson.

Richardson chewed up 52 yards on a drive that ended with a one-yard touchdown run by Twin Fernandez that gave the Griffins a 7-0 lead over Edison late in the first quarter at Huntington Beach High.

The drive took nearly nine minutes and Los Alamitos converted three third downs and one fourth down.
